How to use text to speech
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Choose a voice. Voices are grouped by language, and the list depends on your device.
- Click Read aloud. Each word is highlighted as it is spoken, and you can pause, carry on or stop at any time.
Where the voices come from
This tool uses the speech voices installed on your computer or phone. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS each come with several, and you can usually add more languages and better-sounding voices for free in your system's speech or accessibility settings.
Some browsers also offer online voices that send your text to a company's server to be turned into speech. Those are left out of the list on purpose, so everything you paste here stays on your device.
Listening is a good way to proofread, since your ear catches missing words and clumsy sentences that your eye skips over. It also helps with long articles, language learning and resting your eyes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download the speech as an MP3?
No. Browsers play these voices straight to your speakers and don't give web pages a copy of the audio, so the speech can't be saved as a file.
Why is the voice list empty or short?
The list only shows voices that run on your device. Add voices in your system settings, for example Settings, Time and language, Speech on Windows, or Accessibility, Spoken content on a Mac or iPhone, then reload this page.
Is there a length limit?
No. Long text is split into sentences and read one after another, so you can paste a whole article or chapter.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Only voices that run on your device are offered, so the text is turned into speech locally and never leaves your browser.
