How to decode or encode Base64

  1. Choose Decode to turn Base64 into text, or Encode to turn text into Base64.
  2. Paste your text into the first box. The result appears in the second box as you type.
  3. Copy the result, or click Use result as input to run it the other way.

What is Base64?

Base64 writes any data, including images and other binary files, using only 64 plain characters: A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, + and /. That lets the data travel safely through systems built for text, such as email, JSON, URLs and HTML. The encoded version is about a third larger than the original.

Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or private data.

URL-safe Base64 swaps + and / for - and _ so the result can sit inside a web address without being changed. JSON Web Tokens use this form. The decoder accepts both kinds automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Encoding and decoding run in your browser, so tokens and other data you paste stay on your device.

Why does the decoded text look like gibberish?

The Base64 probably holds a file, such as an image or a PDF, rather than text. When that happens, a Download decoded file button appears so you can save it.

Does it handle emoji and accented letters?

Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 before encoding, so characters such as é, ü and emoji come back exactly as they went in.
