How to extract images from a PDF
- Choose PNG or JPG. PNG keeps every pixel exactly as stored, and JPG makes smaller files for photos.
- Drop your PDF into the box, or tap it to choose the file. The tool goes through each page and lists the images it finds.
- Download the images you want, or download them all as a zip.
Extracting images versus converting pages
This tool saves the pictures that were placed in the PDF, at the resolution they were stored in. A photo that was shrunk to fit a column comes out at its full size, and text around it is left out.
If you want a picture of a whole page, including its text and layout, use PDF to JPG instead. That also works better for charts and diagrams, which are often drawn as shapes in the PDF and are not stored as images at all.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The images are read from the PDF in your browser using Mozilla's open source PDF.js, so the file never leaves your device.
Why are some images missing?
Logos, charts and icons are often drawn with lines and shapes instead of being stored as pictures, so there is nothing to extract. Tiny images such as bullets and dividers are skipped unless you untick the option.
Why does an image appear only once?
When the same picture appears on many pages, such as a logo in the header, the PDF stores it once. The tool saves it once too, with the number of the first page it appears on.
Does a scanned PDF work?
Yes. A scanned document usually holds one image per page, so you get each scanned page back as an image at its original resolution.
