What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's "On the Ends of Good and Evil", written in 45 BC. Words were cut and rearranged so it no longer reads as real sentences. Designers have used it as filler text since at least the 1960s, when it was printed on Letraset transfer sheets.
It is useful because it looks like ordinary text, with a natural mix of short and long words, but nobody stops to read it. Reviewers can judge a layout's fonts and spacing without getting distracted by the words.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use lorem ipsum for free?
Yes. The text is centuries old and belongs to no one, so you can use it in any project.
What does the HTML option do?
It wraps each paragraph in <p> and </p> tags, ready to paste into HTML or a website builder's code view.
Should I leave lorem ipsum on a live website?
No. Search engines see it as low-quality content, so replace it with real text before the page goes live.
