How to compare two texts

  1. Paste the original text in the first box and the new version in the second.
  2. Click Compare. Added text is highlighted in green and removed text in red with a line through it.
  3. Switch between Words, Lines and Characters to change how closely the texts are compared.

Which comparison should I use?

  • Words suits essays, contracts and articles, where you want to see which words changed inside a sentence.
  • Lines suits code, lists and config files, where each line is a unit.
  • Characters catches tiny edits such as a changed digit in a number or a missing letter.

Ignore extra spaces skips changes that are only spacing, such as a double space or different indentation. Ignore case treats "Total" and "total" as the same.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded?

No. The comparison runs in your browser, so drafts, contracts and code stay on your device.

Can I compare Word documents or PDFs?

Copy the text out of each file and paste it into the boxes. Formatting such as bold and fonts is not compared, only the text.

How large can the texts be?

Documents of tens of thousands of words work fine. Comparing very long texts by character can be slow, so use Words or Lines for those.
